Jet lag isn't just about distance. It's about direction. We modelled recovery between 27 major cities. Flying east averages ~2.4 days to feel normal; flying west, only ~1.7. Here are the routes that hit hardest.
Flying east costs you more

The 12 toughest long-hauls
Every one is an eastbound trip near the 12-hour maximum shift, so they all cluster around the ~5-day mark, the longest recovery in the set.

Your internal clock naturally runs slightly longer than 24 hours, so it prefers to delay, which is what flying west asks of it. Flying east forces it to advance, which it resists. That's why a New York to Asia trip can leave you off for several days while the return leg fades faster, even though the distance is identical. The practical upshot: plan the least recovery time for eastbound legs, and use morning light heading east, evening light heading west, to speed things along.
Recovery estimated with a common sleep-science rule of thumb for functional recovery ("feeling back to normal"): roughly a day of adjustment for every 2.5 time zones eastbound (harder) and every 3.5 zones westbound (easier).
